About
With over 20 years experience in the industry, Rich Newey is an award-winning, multi-hyphenate director, writer, editor and producer.
Starting his directing career in music videos and commercials, Newey has collaborated with a wide variety of music artists including: Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Akon, Missy Elliott, Sean Paul, Tiesto, Three 6 Mafia, Nipsey Hussle, Ice Cube, Mack 10, Mark Ronson, Twista, Bone Thugs n' Harmony, Rich Boy, Jermaine Dupri, Digital Underground, Ludacris, T.I., Anthony Hamilton, Nappy Roots, Nate Dogg and Ghostface Killah as well as such diverse brands as Midway Games, Adidas, General Motors and Proctor & Gamble.
With editing being an essential tool in his toolbox, Newey honed those skills in film school, earning a BFA at the Academy Of Art University in San Francisco. One of his early successes was an Apple spec commercial he cut during his senior year. It won the coveted Gold Clio Award as well as an A.I.C.P. Award and now enjoys a home in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. As a professional editor, Newey was fortunate enough to edit Shakira's "Waka, Waka" music video, which was shot in 3D and premiered globally during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010. To date the video has over 4.2 billion views on YouTube.

In film, Newey directed, produced and edited the award winning feature "Killing Eleanor". Released in 2020, the film took top honors at the Savannah Film Festival for Best Narrative Feature and he was also nominated for the emerging director award at the St. Louis International Film Festival. Most recently Newey completed the dramedy feature "Adult Children", which stars Ella Rubin, Betsy Brandt, Aya Cash, Thomas Sadoski and Mimi Rogers. It premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival in June 2025 to rave reviews. The film also garnered a special jury mention for Best Ensemble Performance. The film had it's international premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh, where it took home the Best International Independent Film Award.
In television, some of Newey's work includes the action packed hit "Blindspot" (NBC), the feel good series "God Friended Me" (CBS), and the critically acclaimed series "The Fosters" (Freeform), among others. In TV movies he's directed such hits as "Why Can't My Life Be A Rom-Com?" (Peacock), which earned him a Leo Award for Best Director; "The Christmas House 2 (Hallmark), which was nominated for a GLAAD Award; and "Ghosts Of Christmas Always" (Hallmark), which was named by "Good Morning America" as one of the best Hallmark Christmas Movies of all time.
On the writing side, Newey is in development on two projects currently. The first is a psychological thriller that delves into identity, consciousness and quantum physics with Marcos Siega attached as producer and the second is a 6 part miniseries based on Newey's grandmother's memoirs, which documents her experiences living and surviving in Nazi occupied Poland during WWII.
Originally from Palm Springs, California, Newey is a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia and holds dual citizenship in both Canada and the U.S..
